 Instead of just recording reality, photographs have become the norm for the way things appear to us, thereby changing the very idea of reality and of realism.  The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking. You see someone on the street, and essentially what you notice about them is the flaw. If you scratch a great photograph, you find two things: a painting and a photograph. The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own. Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. Photographers, along with dentists, are the two professions never satisfied with what they do. Every dentist would like to be a doctor and inside every photographer is a painter trying to get out. Life is not about significant details, illuminated in a flash, fixed forever. Photographs are. I really believe there are things nobody would see if I didn't photograph them.
